Ewe Aesthetic
This collection reflects and celebrates the richness of Ewe sartorial culture and how I, as a designer, perceive this sartorial culture through the eyes of my generation and my time.
It demonstrates my aesthetic and cultural heritage as an Ewe. It shows how we Ewe conceive beauty, aesthetics and style. How we approach the human body when we dress. Which parts of the body we choose to show and which we choose to cover. She shows the cultural significance and value of each piece we wear, as well as its history. The traditional Ewe woman in middle age, for example, shows her shoulders, while the young girl reveals her abdomen, her legs, and always has volume in her pelvis when she dresses. And pearls too, we love pearls. They’re the most popular accessory in our community.
Traditionally, we make l-beads from clay. But the beads I’m using in this collection are made from recycled bottles, glass and window panes, which adds another dimension to my creative process: ethical fashion. Overcycling and recycling.
This collection is for women who like to wear beautiful clothes, but who also like to wear a story, an idea or a concept. Women who know and understand that if this dress is cut to size, it can be recycled.
